Very interesting new paper regarding the engineering of photosynthesis is available at the link below. A team from the University of Illinois and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service have engineered plants (tobacco) with a built-in photorespiratory shortcut that increases plant production ~40% in so-called real-world conditions. (South PF, et. al., Science. 2019 Jan 4;363(6422)). It makes for a very interesting read.  http://science.sciencemag.org/content/363/6422/eaat9077
